Applicant must be a U.S. citizen with a minimum 2.8 GPA. Application forms, a copy of the school's letter of acceptance, two letters of recommendation, and a one page, typed, double-spaced biographical sketch required. Application forms must be original, typed, completed and signed, and be embossed with the school's official seal. Selection is based upon financial need, academic achievement, a biographical sketch, and letters of reference.

Applicant must be a Scot coming from Scotland to the U.S. for graduate work and must plan to enroll full-time. Applicant must be able to cite his or her Scottish descent and submit a statement of plans and goals. Applicant must have a meritorious academic record and demonstrate financial need. Special attention is given to work that will demonstrably contribute to enhanced knowledge of Scottish history or culture, and preference is given to those pursuing scientific and engineering degrees.

Letter from chair of applicant's department verifying the discipline in which the applicant is majoring and that he/she is a full-time student is required.
