Applicant must be an undergraduate student currently enrolled at a U.S. college or university. Applicant must be part of a team that creates a strategic media plan based on a hypothetical special election referendum issue. Students work with actual, real-world, data from leading national research and ratings firms to create a media plan that will make the most effective impressions on their target voter. The six finalist teams earn an all-expense paid trip to Washington, DC for Media Scholars Week. On the final full day, each team presents their strategic plans to a panel of judges; top two teams take home a portion of $10,000 in scholarship awards.

Applicant must be enrolled or accepted in a Bachelor of Science nursing program (specific to the B.S.N. scholarship). Purpose of program is to increase the number of registered nurses (RN) practicing in medically underserved areas of California. Award is to pay tuition, necessary fees, books, supplies, and educational equipment costs for nursing; debt that was incurred while attending a baccalaureate degree nursing program. Recipient must be willing to practice in California as a RN providing full-time (32 hours per week) direct patient care.

Nonfiction writers who are not recipients of the award may be considered for the $1,000 Special Award for Nonfictional Prose. No separate application is required for the special award.
