Applicant must be a high school, pre-university, secondary school, undergraduate, or graduate student who is or will be studying optics, photonics, or a related field. Selection based upon prospect for long-term contribution that the application will make to the field of optics, photonics, or related field.

Applicant must be a United States citizen enrolled in an accredited two- or four-year institution in the United States who meets the following criteria: is on active duty in the uniformed military services or is an honorably discharged U.S. military veteran (including Reservist and National Guard personnel); who has served in Enduring Freedom Afghanistan or Iraqi Freedom combat operations; or is disabled as a result of combat operations in OEF or OIE. Applicant must be able to submit a copy of Certificate of Service or Discharge Form DD214. Applicant must be a graduate student wishing to carry out all or part of their thesis research at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory. Completion of preliminary coursework and examinations prior to start of the SAO Predoctoral Program and approval of Department Head at applicant's university are required.
